The story of Green Thumb Foundation 's 25+ year journey in water conservation and ecological restoration.
Green Thumb Foundation is driven by a singular purpose: to restore the ecological balance of our water bodies. We focus on rejuvenating dams, desilting reservoirs, and mobilizing communities to take ownership of their natural resources.
"We are not just cleaning a dam; we are reclaiming the future for our farmers and citizens."

70,000 truckloads of silt removed
A historic milestone in conservation

"We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."
We envision a world where communities are not just passive observers but active guardians of their environment. Our goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem where water is abundant, and nature serves all.
A clean, water-secure future.
Communities for massive action.
Ecosystems for long-term health.
Truckloads of silt removed from Khadakwasla Dam
Significant increase in Khadakwasla Dam's water storage capacity
Free distribution of nutrient-rich silt to local farmers
Green Thumb was established by Col. Suresh Patil with a vision to protect the fragile ecosystems of Pune's water bodies.
Initiated the monumental task of desilting the Khadakwasla Dam, realizing that silt was choking the city's lifeline.
The initiative grew into a mass movement, with thousands of volunteers and local farmers joining hands to reclaim water storage.
Opposed the 28km water tunnel project, advocating for sustainable desilting over expensive and damaging infrastructure.
Our work goes beyond just digging silt. It is about revitalizing an entire ecosystem that sustains life in Pune.
Restoring capacity for clean drinking water to millions in Pune.
Providing nutrient-rich silt free of cost to thousands of farmers.
Planting native trees to protect the catchment area's wildlife.
Creating a replicable model of citizen-led environmental action.
Key Milestone
2.5 Million Truckloads
of Silt Removed & Distributed

Comparing the water levels and green cover over the last decade shows undeniable progress.
In October 2023, Green Thumb Foundation opposed a proposed 28-kilometer water tunnel project from Khadakwasla Dam to Phursungi. We raised concerns about the potential environmental impact and advocated for desilting as a more cost-effective and eco-friendly solution to address water management issues.
The dedicated leadership behind the movement.
Together, we can make a lasting impact on our environment and communities.
